India: WPC released New Rules for Low‑Power & Very‑Low‑Power Wireless Systems in the 6 GHz Band (5925–6425 MHz)

2026-01-30

The Department of Telecommunications (DoT) has officially issued GSR 47(E) for the 6 GHz band (5925–6425 MHz)

Per this notification, the 6 GHz band has been delicensed for low-power indoor wireless use, allowing faster and more reliable wireless connectivity.

Devices operating in this band must obtain ETA-SD (Equipment Type Approval – Self Declaration) to comply with WPC regulations.

This is an important step towards enabling next-generation wireless technologies like Wi-Fi 6E and Wi-Fi 7, offering higher speeds, lower latency, and better user experience.

Operational Restrictions

  • Use on oil platforms is prohibited

  • Indoor use is not allowed in moving vehicles, boats, or aircraft (below 10,000 ft)

  • Communication with and control of drones or unmanned aerial systems is prohibited

  • Devices operating in the 5925–6425 MHz band must use a contention-based protocol to ensure fair and efficient sharing of spectrum

Note: Current the WPC portal is not yet updated with these changes. Once the update is completed, applications for the 5925–6425 MHz band can be submitted.
